""White City – Black City"", 2018 – 2019
Between 1930 and 1950, around 4,000 buildings in the Bauhaus and International Style were constructed in Tel Aviv, shaped by Jewish immigrants from Europe. About 1,000 of them now form part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed “White City.”
Sophia Kesting’s project explores this architecture. Her 1,000 photographs feature not only listed landmarks but also lesser-known and contemporary buildings in the International Style—from the city center to migrant-influenced outskirts.
Each image focuses on a single building, framed by subtle signs of urban life. The project presents a view of the city beyond official heritage narratives.
In the exhibition, the photos are presented as posters stacked in three piles. Visitors can take one—allowing the White City to gradually move into private space.
